The end

Or was it the beginning? Maybe it was the middle, then the end...

Nice view out near the top of Amasa Back. Way in the back, fresh snow up in the La Sal range. Not bad to make it from there in the morning, to here in the afternoon, all on the SC, half the way doing the stub pedal shuffle.

So much to see, had to keep my eyes shut for a bit.

Couple of other people thought it would be cool to head to the mountains for a weekend.

Pulp Fiction

That is how I am weaving this all together. In the end, put it all in a blender and drink the juice.

Up in the La Sal Mountains, ride snafu, but might as well soak up all the goodness that is fall

YEAH!

Moab is down in that valley.

So good.

And those dark clouds dropped some fresh snow up there.

One for Thorny...

The Hot Tomato is way beyond pizza paradise. Open a bike mag and you see one of Anne's pictures, probably of Jen ripping some sweet Fruita singletrack. Or a story about their quest to help a friend in need recover. Way more than pizza...

And then while I was wandering around Moab on my stub pedal Soulcraft I see this on the wall.

Yeah, throw in the shot of the sticker for good measure.

Sunday morning, taking the scenic route from Moab to Fruita. Speed limit be damned, shot guns and Hot Tomato can't be slowed down.

Show me the way...

Ah, but a circus was in town, and not the sort that Thorny creates!

No racing...yet

Friday, made the way from Boulder to Moab. Headed out for an afternoon ride in the Slickrock oven.

Plan for Sat am was a shuttle to do the Whole Enchilada. 2 miles into that adventure, heading up the first steep climb, Crank Bros fucked me. Plan b, the rest of the group continued up, I turned back and rode 30 miles of gravel and blacktop back to Moab with one full pedal and one pedal stub. Still some great views along the way.

Didn't take all that long to get back into town, I have some mad stub pedal skills, and the thousands of feet of vertical drop was a nice little helper.

New pedals, back to Time! Anybody want to buy some really snappy looking egg beaters??

Along with the pedals a map was purchased. Ate some food, swapped the pedals and cleats. Headed out to ride Amasa Back. Long road along the Colorado river that turned to gravel and headed up, things were getting more normal. Several Jeeps on the start of the trail, but they creep along, past them in a flash and a great ride.

Rolled back to the hotel about an hour after the group that had done the real ride from the day. Got to hear tails of a getting caught in a snow storm up high, great trails, and on and on. Thanks Crank Bros...

What Time is it?

More to come after some coffee...

Flats

Here is what that fancy Latte inspired.

Zero pictures, one flat tire on the Spot, no flat roads.

Heading to Moab for a few days, the Soulcraft has never been there, neither have I.

A sign

Wasn't sure if I would go for a ride today, other than a ride to get some caffeine. Then I saw this, must be a sign, time to go ride...

In October I will be making a stop in the 612, I wonder if Sammy or B-Rad could lay down something like this on my next trip to 1on1?? Seems like it would fit right in the mug...

Someone else is grinding up the gravel, good to see he is rolling.

Earn your turn pt 2

Most of the rest of these shots are from out on 4th of July road. The gravel road downhill makes stopping to take pictures seem like a good idea. Hey Fride, who sings that song Rattle My Bones???

You know it was a good ride when it ends with this. There was no pot of gold, but some Salmon steaks cooked on the grill on cedar planks was even better at the time...

Earn your turn pt 1

This is not a post about hiking up a mountain to go skiing.

The leaves are starting to turn around here. Seems like a lot of people go and drive around to check out the fall colors. I opted for the bike ride up and around to see the colors turning.

You guessed it, gravel roads were the route I chose. The Spot cx bike was made for those roads, perfection, no other way to describe it. Seems like the colors look better when you pedal your way up the mountains to see them, or maybe it is just that my vision was blurry and I was hallucinating.

Above Sunset CO.

Closing in on the 4th of July Trail Head.

TH.

View west not far from the TH.

View east a few miles into the return trip.

Here is a rough version of the route with elevation.

Press Release

This guy did it.

Then this guy did it.

So it seems like THE thing to do this year.

I don't remember ever retiring from bike racing, more That I got sidetracked and just stopped. Last time I pinned on a number was for the Hopkin's Raspberry Festival Crit in 2007. But it rained, the race was canceled, and I went to Europe for a while and China for a while and then who knows.

There was that SSWC thing in Scotland last Labor Day weekend, but the way the Vitch and I rolled that it for sure did not count as 'racing'.

Either way, no matter how I look at it, I haven't raced in over a year.

With this announcement hitting the blog, I am sure the media crush is about to hit! I will probably be out riding on a gravel road when it does.

Seems like there are a couple things that are required for this to really take hold.

A couple of these, because short socks are not as fast as they used to be.

And one of these, because I guess when you look like a pedophile you get chased a lot, and that must make you fast.

No event has been named as the official comeback event yet, but I am sure said event will benefit from a huge surge in publicity.

Spot on!

Hit up one of my gravel road routes west of town today. Good route, first time I rolled it on the Spot and it was perfect. Sort of like those Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, take two good things and put them together and you get something even better. Never once did I say get my Spot out of this gravel road.

Great view near the top.

Perfect profile for pushing it on the ss. Before I headed out I figured I was going to be a bit overgeared, but 44x18 was just about right. And the thing I was really worried about, the Paul canti's on the canyon back into town, no problem...

Take a look...

Some sort of news is still pending!

Ale

Beer is good, and good beer is better.

This stuff is good, so I guess using my rationale it would make it better. And bringing it home in the xtracycle is the best way.

Micro brew in a can from just up the road in Lyons CO.

They also sponsor bike races and a mountain bike team along with Spot.

Just the inspiration required to ride my Spot up to Lyons on Saturday for a nice little road ride. Tufo road tubies and a 44x16 was just right, on the ride out anyway...

Bad

Was sitting at the dining room table last night, I think I was trying to post some random pictures to this damn blog. The street is always a quiet one. An ambulance and a 50 went blasting past, with both bottoming out over the speed bump, sirens blaring. Something bad.

About an hour later I headed out on the xtracycle to get some food at the market. The Boulder PD had several blocks shut down, patrols, flairs....

Just read this in the paper. Bad

At this point, determining who was 'at fault' is really a bit of a mute point.

18.9.08

Singletrack

No pictures, didn't stop to take any. And was sort of lost and...

The camera is not broken, just soaking it.

16.9.08

No pictures

Same old story, look at the last couple posts for the views. Well most of them, went further, just didn't mess with slowing down to take pictures.

Big news coming soon!

15.9.08

Even More Gravel

The gravel just seems to have the right feel these days. And the view isn't bad either.

Everything gets a little distorted after climbing for an hour or two.

12.9.08

More gravel

Rode west.
Went up.
Hit gravel roads.
Went up.
Turned into Forest Service Roads.
Went north.
Went up.

Headed east.
Went up.
Nice view looking back.
Went down.
Went up.
Went down.
Hit blacktop.
Went down fast.

67 Surly Set ups Pt 3

Load it up.

Bob, are you keeping track, I must be on set up 18 or somthing like that?? It is sort of like High Life, you lose track of the count after a few.

Anyway, load up some tp and detergent.

Or your aerostich and moto gear.

Or just park it at the end of the stable to keep the rift raft away.

And I know it is hard to believe, but right now the xtracycle creaks more than any other bike I have ever ridden. Well at least is doesn't creak when coasting or going downhill... unless I stand up, then it creaks...

11.9.08

Finding Fall

Endless supply of gravel roads.

Ride and smile, or is it grin and bare it.

And I thought my Bianchi was flexy!?

Fall anyone?

Found some singletrack past a lunch stop. The trails were sweet, but the legs were tired from hours of climbing. I hear you can drive to those trails...

10.9.08

HAZARDOUS and DANGEROUS

The sign say is all, HAZARDOUS and DANGEROUS....

Doesn't look too bad, but it must be, the sign says so.

Hard to tell in this picture, but dude on the trike had two huge dogs harnessed on the steerer tube and he was pushing the speed limit on the way uphill. He lives HAZARDOUS and DANGEROUS, so he is wearing a safety vest. Saw his bike sitting on the side of the road a while later, fork was all bent and rusty, looks like at some point in time he ran his rig into a brick wall going about 20, so he is living the H & D...

The end

Up there

Turned around, but just up this to the top.
