•Saturday: Another storm flies into the state, initially putting down the most snow in central and southern Colorado favoring Telluride, Silverton, Crested Butte, Aspen, and Powderhorn with 5-10″. As the day turns to afternoon and evening, the storm will move across the state and focus the heavier snow along and north of I-70, including Aspen and Eldora. This will be a windy and snowy day for most areas…so dress warm and enjoy the deepness. Rolled out of Eldo at 3:30 on Tuesday with snow flying.

Hopped into the singletrack near the Ned HS to rip it one last time for the year.

Great to get in there before winter locks it down.

If I went back today I would need snowshoes rather than a bike, a foot already and it is still coming down.

It is dumping in Boulder too, hope it keeps coming down. The UCI cx weekend will be prime for some superfan action if a foot of snow hangs around. Might need to dig out the superfan boots, it would be a shame to lose the Belgian mud off them, but that is what they are for.

Rode the Soulcraft for the second day this week. The fresh Phil bb is like butter, I think if I had a watt meter, I was using at least 50 extra just to get the old one to move..

Sunrise this am was unreal, bright red cloud filled sky. Sort of a calm before the storm feel, no wind, warmer that the past several days too.

Might be the last bike commute up the hill for awhile. Gave me a little extra motivation to charge up it today.

Saturday made day 6, bike 6, and route home 6 for the week. Great to work an extra day this week to make it happen. And six days in a row up the shelf road is a full week...

Picked up some new wheels on Friday, old blue King hubs off the Bianchi Martini have found new life with some Stan's 29er rims and Stans Raven cx tires. Peeled off most of the stickers and the wheels are pretty stealth looking. Reminds me of the looks of BBBB's set up with his dark blue travel mtn / cx bike.

Speaking of Bob Brown, he told me that the Stan's wheels would be great, but not to go and beat them off road and... or I would destroy them. So I headed home with plans for an unmarked connector from Mag to Flagstaff. Made a wrong turn and ended up going down some crazy rock ledges and 4x4 rutted out steep rocky roads. Then had to carry the TC over a ridge or two to get back on track, more crazy nasty 4x4 roads and I made it home in three and a half hours. The new wheel tire combo is great, and I didn't ruin them yet Bob.

Do I look lost here? I thought I was unlost, but then after I took this I figured out that I was still lost.

Got a little superfan action in with the G pup on Sunday aft out at the Boulder Res. Great battle in the mens open race between Danny Summerhill, Jon Baker, Mat Pacocho, Brandon 'Dubba' Dwight, and Pete 'The Pilot' Webber. Summerhill pushed it from the gun, spent the most time on the front attacking, and had the most in the tank in the end. Great racing by all 5 guys, all tough as nails in the cold, wet snowy conditions.

It is coming out of the sky, both the real stuff and the other stuff. Eldo snowmaking dept fired up for the first night of the season last night.... Tic Toc

Commutathon is still on.

Made it home Wed night down a sloppy Sugarloaf rd on the LHT. Cold and damp, the whole world was frosted white. Had to hop in the shower the second I got home to warm up.

Thurs was a clear cold day and the Hwood Jav got the call. Blasted it right down Boulder Canyon. Almost like a rest day, but still a good 45 minute big ring ride.

Soulcraft brought me up this morning, making it day five for the week on bike number five. Planning to head down Gold Hill rd, or maybe down some Forest Service roads to make it route number five for the week as well.

With winter getting ready to slam to door on some of my great rides, there is no time to waste.

Only picutre I took this week was Monday morning. This is the Gun before I destroyed the rear wheel in a pothole. It is resting for the winter now since I down't have any Campy rear wheels that work...

And here is the context.

I took the bus from Boulder to Ned, with the LHT on the front rack getting glazed over with ice and snow. Made a stop at Happy Trails to get coffee, juice, and a pecan roll. Back out the door, on the LHT, and thru the old town section of Ned, inch or two of snow/slush on the ground. Past the HS and heading to Eldo, snow/ sleet coming down, but no wind and really a pretty nice morning. Quarter mile past the school, I hear the words.

"Don't you have anything better to do"

Sort of odd, since it is not the type of morning that someone would be hanging out outside.

I look to the left, in the driveway that goes behind the Ned HS football field, 8 or so dirtbag kids are standing in a circle in the snow/ slush / sleet. They are smoking, something.

My response was a blank stare.

The follow up words from the circle jerk were good, but he was losing steam "You are riding your bike in a snowstorm".

My response was a smile.

Then, I went on with the business of getting a mile down the road to start the climb up the shelf road.

About the only other response that might have been spot on would have been "Fuckin A". I think that would have made sense, it really is an answer to everything.

During my slog up the shelf I thought about the evil looking smile that Chris Horner gets on his face while he is flying up climbs during races. It is as if he is suffering, but really enjoying the suffering. And in the smile there is also some sort of pleasure that while he is making himself suffer, he is making anyone who wants to stay with him suffer even more.

Hopefully my smile was an evil one this morning. Even if the only person suffering was me.

Today is day seven in a row on the bike. Hat trick for the week on commutes. All on different bikes. Monday was like summer and the KW Gunnar took me up and then the long way home thru Ward. Tues was like summer in the morning and Seattle in the afternoon. The Spot took my down from Eldo to Boulder via Mag, the entire ride was in a fog / cloud of drizzle and rain. Today the LHT got called into duty. With a couple inches of snow on the shelf road the granny gear is nice for sitting to get traction and spinning up up up.

I wonder what season it will be when I roll out this afternoon. Anything is better than Seattle.

Rode thru Gold Hill on Friday night on the Spot. After making it up the wall just east of town, the view back west never gets old.

Stopped out at the Valmont bike park on Saturday to watch a bit of cx racing. Great crowd, tons of racers. Super lame that all the Cat 3 and others were out warming up on the course during the junior race. I guess, they are just kids, and the people out there are professional weekend warriors, so they have that right to ride the course whenever they want. I mean the kids don't even have deep v carbon tubular wheels so they can't really be that serious about it...

Went up to RMNP with some family that was in town and watched the Elk being Elk.

Makes me think of this.

Ah, that is what we are doing wrong, by saving $4 a week on eggs, they must pay the mortgage on a their million dollar home. And every now and then you can have a 'free' roasted chicken. But the Prius must get dirty from hauling the feed?

Next summer we will have a garden, chickens, and of course a multi million $ home...Maybe a goat too.

Finally got the LHT out on the road. Super sweet set up for hauling stuff to work. I had to pull the front rack off so that I can put it in the bike rack for the Boulder to Ned bus ride. Plenty of space in the rear bags for a weeks work of lunch food and extra cloths.

Took Magnolia home on Monday night, the LHT is like a freight train on the gravel roads. It even handled the steep switch back decent well. All in all it rode like a bike, a long stable freight train of a bike.

The old xtr drivetrain makes for great gearing for getting up the steeps, thanks for robbing that of your wife's bike Thorny!

Stopped on the way up to Eldo this am to clear some rocks off the road, trying to avoid a repeat of last Friday.

Thurs am things were a bit different, winter is back. About 20 out this morning with a wind ripping out of the west at 30+ mph and an inch of snow/ice on the ground. Made the ride up the shelf road on the Soulcraft intersting to say the least.

Just hoping the wind keeps up so I can get a sweet taily all the way home.

The Surly Travelers Check got rolled out this am for the first ever commute. It rode like a bike... I think I have ridden that bike 20 times, and 18 of them were in Germany. It was the perfect bike for a different time and place, but after putting the beat down on the Spot I figured I may as well do the same to another.

Saw a red fox walking around on the swimming pool that is covered at the Boulder park a couple blocks from home this am, crazy like a fox...

We got G all cleaned up at the groomers yesterday. After the last attempt at giving him a bath at home, which resulted in him being clean and our place being a total disaster, decided it is easier to have it done by a groomer. He walked away with a bandana too, that is right, he is poppin it and rockin it like an Izod...

Saw a bull Moose crossing the road near Ned HS, thing was huge, glad I had a car between us. Huge, and tall, walked over a standard height barbed wire fence like it wasn't even there.

After three days of tough commutes, the Spot had to be retired to the garage today. It survive muddy Monday down Mag, Tues down Sugarloaf, and Wed down a sloppy Gold Hill Rd / Sunshine. Something about that metal on metal sound the back brakes were making as I flew down Sunshine canyon said better take a look at it before it heads out again...

The muck/gravel/water proved too much for one of my Planet Bike superflash blinkies too, it might have life once it dries out. Fender could be in order.

The Hwood Jav is the sacrificial lamb for today. Migrated a set of Time atacs onto it, aired it up...

Did a little offroad shortcut to get thru Ned this am and it bit me, the road tires didn't like the sharp little stones. Got to road test my Topeak Master Blaster pump, worked pretty slick. Frame pump sized and has a little foot holder that flips down and a pump hose and tiny little guage. Nice to not rip off the valve stem while trying to get enough air in. Sweet little pump, just too big for a pocket, but it is the best pump I have ever used out on the road or trail.

Also got to see some Elk chillin in the valley north of the turn up shelf road this am. Heard one buggle and spotted them, pretty cool, and made for some good entertainment during my flat fix.

The fleet is beat down right about now, I need to spend some time getting things in working order.

At least I had time this am to take the Speedplay road pedals off the Spot. I think the Time pedals and mtb shoes will decrease the sketch factor of the ride home by at least ten fold!

Feels like fall, low 40s in Ned this am. No colors like above yet, but there will be.

Quick stop at singletracks coffee and then up the hill on the Soulcraft. Cool air, sun shining, perfect morning. The gear felt big, but it always does going up the shelf.

Last night took a nice little detour on the road bike; 1k down to Ned, north and up 1k past Ward to Overland Ranch rd then down 4k thru Jamestown and out to 36. Great 2 hour commute, not much coasting along, made good use of the 53 x 11&12.

With the cool air, the mind wanders to winter, watched Hand Cut last night. Soon...

I have plans to grind up some gravel on the way home and over the weekend. Tough to beat time spent in 4 mile canyon, Switz Trail, and Gold Hill Rd. I just might earn myself a piece of pie.

If you ride for a company that picks up garbage, why not hang onto a team car going up the mtn, it is sort of like hanging on the back of a garbage truck picking up the trash. I wonder if their team car is actually a minature garbage truck??

But if you ride for a team called Ride Clean, and then you hang onto a team car so you can make it up the hill and inside the time cut... Well, then you are a complete hypocrite. You are not good enough to stay in the race, so you cheat. Maybe if you would have juiced up ahead of time you could have avoided cheating during the race?? Either way, nothing clean about it.

They did all get their names and sponsors names up in 'lights'. No such thing as bad publicity?

The UCI Press Release:

Danilo Di Luca provisionally suspended

Earlier today, the UCI advised Italian rider Danilo Di Luca that he is provisionally suspended. The decision to provisionally suspend Mr Di Luca was made in response to a report from the WADA accredited laboratory in Paris indicating an Adverse Analytical Finding of Recombinant EPO (CERA) in blood samples collected from him at the Giro d’Italia on 20 May and 28 May 2009.

These adverse findings were a direct result of a targeted test programme conducted on Mr Di Luca using information from his biological passport’s blood profile, previous test results and his race schedule.

The provisional suspension of Mr Di Luca remains in force until a hearing panel convened by the Italian Cycling Federation determines whether he has indeed committed an anti-doping rule violation under Article 21 of the UCI Anti-Doping Rules.

Might be caused by spending too much time up in Ned, but I think the Grateful Dead will be the official soundtrack of the tour this year, well at least the sprint stages.

So I was up early to do this...

Not the real route since there was some sweet singletrack along Mag that doesn't get put on a map...

For the special day I wore my sleeveless Swobo beer mug jersey (zipper all the way up all the way up the mtn) along my winter shoe covers just to keep Thorny wondering how hot my feet are and how bad they must stink.

Made a quick stop at Singletracks Coffee Shop in Ned for some food and drink. Ran into a crew of people riding to Boulder for the day.

This is for Psmurf, he likes to keep track of what Young G$ is up to.

With the addition of a bit more daylight each day, I finally got the commute sorted out.

Started out with a little roll to the bus station.

20 some miles up the canyon in the bus with the Soulcraft hanging off the front on a rack.

Got out at the Ned school and only had about 3 miles left and I was at work. Map doesn't show much, and 3 miles isn't much of a ride, unless you look at the elevation change, good little wake up call with the temps hanging around 10.

Nice view of the sun coming up and The Republic under clouds, or maybe just a bunch of wake and bake exhale.

Rode the whole way home, and even though it looks all downhill, there was plenty of climbing in there. And the headwind, snow squall, and flat tire along the way made it feel like a good ride.

Oh yeah, Thorny, I for sure earned that piece of carrot cake. I even took a different route that added some extra climbing to get there. Throw in sun turned to rain turned to snow and back to sun at the end and you have a great Saturday afternoon.

Things are all good up at Eldora, after some warm weather it has been fresh snow for days and it might stay that way for a while.
